241: Beatles Olympiad ’66 part one

Taking a detour from some of the heavier SATB topics of late for end-of-summer light entertainment, Gary Wenstrup and I return to the series of gold, silver and bronze rankings of Beatle cuts through their catalog. We’re at the halfway point now as The Beatles turned the page from a touring to a studio band, but not before a final blast of nostalgia by years’ end.

  1. When I Get Home is clunky and somewhat out of key. I always thought that and I was like 6 when I heard that song and thought it then.

Here’s what I’ve since learned and figured out – they were trying to do a Motown/Tamla type thing And I think the problem is that George Martin didn’t know how to pull that out of them.

They’re trying to do black American artist sound of the time and missed it – by a mile. I wonder if any of the Motown crew had ever recorded that song and I wonder what the song would have sounded like if recorded in Detroit.

    Just my 2 cents.

  3. Enjoyed the show..
We all have our Beatles biases and Robert is very much pro-George.
I Want To Tell You in the top 3? Mmmm.
Please don’t say Piggies is your go-to track on the White Album!
I guess Long, Long, Long will make it though, which I agree is a wonderful track.

On another matter, have you ever seen the full transcript of Lennon’s interview on the Parkinson show?
I think that would be fascinating. Only seen small bit on YouTube.
Maybe it could be a topic for a future show.
