197: Collecting The Beatles Part Three

Previous guest Russ Lease returns with stories from the world of top end collecting: vehicles (including the Magical Mystery Tour bus), attire (shoes, boots, jackets), paper (a Brian Epstein contract) and vinyl. Russ was the founder of Beatles Suits, the go-to resource for Fab tailoring; he was also the auctions columnist for Beatleology magazine. Lastly: he is a partner in Fab Four Exhibitions, the traveling Beatles museum of artifacts.

Russ has a lot to say about the back story on a lot of familiar Beatle items that have come up for auction.

  1. Interesting episode revealing insights into collecting Beatles memorabilia. This goes beyond the mainstream conversation. The fact that Ludwig had a stand by drum cover replacement for Ringo Starr in every city of their US tours is fascinating. One wonders why the Beatles didn’t just have an extra drum cover or kits. But then this is also during the infancy period of rock & roll tours. Also, thanks for speaking on the tour jackets and clothing. Those are also insightful. Beatles definitely were making many aesthetic decisions in developing and maintaining their presence during their rise to fame until Abbey Road.

  3. Hello Robert, after hearing the comments made by Russ, would like to state that I can tell you a lot more about the Bus used during the filming of MMT .
I was in the film, an Extra during the second week of Filming in West Malling.
I own one of, if not the worlds most extensive Magical Mystery Tour Collections.
I have been collecting now for almost 40 years
In September 2017 I drove with 30 People the entire MMT -where we met up with numbers of People who were also Extras in the Film for example Nicola and her Mother, the hairdresser, during filming and others on Board the Bus or who had direct contact with the Beatles during filming in 1967.
We met up with 16 different people from 1967.
