181: Erin Weber and The Beatles

It’s the return of our favorite Fab historian. In this lengthy dialogue, we discuss an array of literature from the Beatles historical canon: among the works, Many Years From Now – The Love You Make – John Lennon: In My Life – Ray Coleman’s bios of John and of Paul – The Macs: Mike McCartney’s Family Album, and others as well. As usual, Erin employs the methodology of a trained historian to assess how reliable these works are, in terms of presenting research and history that are worthy of our time as fans.

Be sure to check out her book, The Beatles and The Historians, as well as her blog.

  1. This was a fascinating and very important show. Important in the sense of getting the truth on the history not the myth of the BEATLES. She is always a great guest!

The first time I read”Lennon Remembers” back when it came out in 1971 I was initially somewhat shocked but even then at age 18 I quickly realized a lot of it was just a big RANT a combination of exaggerations and glib statements and sarcasm coming from Lennon’s mouth. Probably 90% of it was nonsense. Now I must say the John Lennon is my biggest artistic hero and certainly one of the genius songwriters of the last 100 years. However Paul McCartney is right there with him as a songwriter too in my opinion the best ever in the Rock N Roll genre. The bias for Lennon and the anti-McCartney attitudes began in earnest with that interview and were continued by largely counter culture journalists and authors you get into the reasons here very well I would love to hear even more I hope from Erin Weber. THANKS!

    1. For me, it would be Ray Connolly’s recent work. An honest broker who actually knew him and had the integrity to not accept all of John’s utterances at face value.

  3. I loved BEATLES since age of 3. The music is what bought joy and intrigue. I never thought hearing about the human frailties could make people take sides and divulge so deep into wanting the truth. I wish I could erase all the personal do dads I’ve heard and read. Just listen to the albums.

  5. Ah, I loved the podcast and interview– thank you! I have several books I’m going to try to locate now. I’ve been really frustrated with a few I’ve found on my own recently so I really look forward to learning from some more quality people. Or at least getting different points of view.

I hate to be so ignorant, but what was the John Lennon song you played around three-quarters of the way through?

    Thanks again.

      1. Ah, thank you! I will put your books at the top of my list as well– and I will check out some of the other recorded podcasts.

  7. I have been listening to many SATB episodes in the last year, and Erin is undoubtedly one of the most interesting and enlightening (her book is a must-have for anyone serious about Beatles history too) – great episode!
I think the episodes with Ray Connolly were also up there – I could listen to him for hours. And I agree that his Lennon biog is required reading!
Thanks Robert for an always interesting program, where I’m constantly learning from the in-depth discussions with your varied guests.

  8. In this great August 1986 hour long Entertainment This Week interview with Paul by Barbara Howar who asked him rare great questions that most interviewers don’t ask, and he came across intelligent, funny, serious and charming. Paul said working with someone as talented as John, and he said and by the way George and Ringo, he said they tend to be left out of this talent thing, but they are highly, highly talented guys.

Barbara said to Paul probably your first great love was Jane Asher and she was a strong yet kind woman too,and Paul turned his head and the look on his face for 2 minutes, it really struck an emotional chord with him and he obviously didn’t expect her to bring Jane up. And Jane was not a girl, she was a 22 year old woman and when she and Paul met when she had just turned 17 weeks before, and Paul turned 21 in two months,Jane was already mature and sophisticated and she had been in movies, theatre and TV shows she was in her first film at age 5.

She asked him what he thought about his Wings music and then he said that at the time he was in Wings he was giving it his 100% but he never felt that it was as great as The Beatles and he said he felt how can I follow The Beatles?

But then he also said that he was only now re-listening to his Wings music and discovering a lot of it was pretty good, and Barbara Howar said something like that must have been enough to make you want to hang it up, and Paul said it wasn’t too pleasant.
