227A: The Girls’ Get Back part one

In the latest of the SATB series examining Peter Jackson’s Get Back, we bring on returning guests Debbie Gendler (first in heard in 121: New York Stories); the first US Beatles fan, plus cartoonist/author Carol Tyler (first heard in 146: Fab 4 Mania). In so doing, we present a first generation fan perspective and reaction to the documentary.
My special guest co-host: Dr. Allison Bumsted, who herself previously guested in 2019 in 176A and 176B: Critiquing The Critics: A Case Study with Wings

  1. As an “original” fan, I was 16 when Let I Be first came out….I can identify with much of what you all are saying. I saw THE FILM Let I Be twice when it came out and NO I did not immediately see it or sense that they were breaking up…I was just in awe of seeing them up close and working on songs as musicians , being a musician myself. When I saw it with a group of people the second time I remember some of them got a more negative vibe than me, especially about YOKO!
So now I am on my FIFTH viewing on GET BACK… like a couple of you I sometimes put it on for 5-10 minutes at a time and I go right back to the AWE AND JOY. FOREVER GRAYEFUL TO PETER JACKSON AND LINDSAY- HOGG for documenting this! Thanks.

    1. feel the same way — deeply thankful to Jackson and Lindsay-Hogg! .. Also its so true what Robert and his musician guests said recently about Lindsay-Hogg — how we was in the Beatle’s circle, an ally and fan, and just trying to do the tricky job he was given — and which made it more than fair his fair warning that he was going to bug them if need be. They fell for the old bug in a flower pot trick. More power to Lindsay-Hogg. Him chasing the catty, illusive Beatles with his booms and cameras and flower pots was like a loving sparing match between equals. All’s fair. Everyone won in the end.

  3. This was wonderful! I am a first-gen fan as well and I identified with so much of what Debbie and Carol said. I saw “Let It Be” in a theater in 1970 and it gutted me. Seeing “Get Back” was a completely different experience. The joy The Beatles have always brought the world came rushing back as we were all allowed inside during those amazing days of January 1969. I went back and re-read the diary entry I wrote after seeing “Let It Be” and I found that my assessment of the situation at the time was pretty perceptive. Despite what the press was reporting and the skewed story that “Let It Be” offered, those of us who grew up with The Beatles and had followed them since the early days could understand what was going on with them, and we knew in our hearts that they still loved each other. Thanks for this engaging and thoughtful podcast, and for featuring the perspective of first-gen fans and women.

  5. Can’t wait to listen to this… its hard to keep up, you’re like Paul in 1969 here.

Your podcast is always an event — a new look at some corner of the Beatles universe few have looked at … and, Lord, I so much appreciate the incredible editing you do as well! Such a gift!! Its one of the best parts of the podcasts

Also, thank you for the first meaningful in-depth look at the Jackson / Lindsay-Hogg masterpiece …

    Petition:

Disney, please stream every single hour of a) the film footage b) the audio-only recordings and, c) the soundless-video footage … and all in sequence.

You can cover the audio-only parts with live cartoons or still footage this time.

As for the soundless video footage, it needs to be shown in the correct sequence (maybe a guest star’s commentary over it, or an earlier Beatle’s song?).

Disney, please do the right thing here: an epic one-year or longer streaming event of Beatles in real time (being with the fab Four 8-hours a day for a month in 1969) — and, if possible, with Ringo, Paul, Yoko and Dhani and/or Robert Rodriguez and Mark Lewisohn doing play-by-play commentary for parts of the film footage that have no sound) …

    Shine on!

  7. There is a GB digital download file available for $12 at vidstorehd.com. It is a mkv file and if you need an app player VLC can play just about anything.
