269: George Harrison in the 70s with Eoghan Lyng

Between 1970 and 1979, George issued six studio albums (plus one triple-live one), followed by a second draft of his 1980 album the following year. Rock scribe Eoghan Lyng and I re-examine these works with fresh ears – we hope you will too.

  1. Another great discussion, and Eoghan’s book is definitely one I’m going to enjoy reading.

I’ve been giving George’s 1979 album quite a few re-listens lately, and I’ve reassured myself that it’s my favorite Hari LP (other than the title; “George Harrison”? How unimaginative. In my own head canon, this album is called “Not Guilty”). That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s his best…ATMP holds that role for me. But this one came right in the sweet spot of my growing appreciation of both the Beatles and music in general. In ’79 I was 12 years old, and this record seemed to me to be everything a modern pop album ought to be, right down to the undeniably catchy Top 40 hit. I can still vividly recall buying it at Montgomery Ward. In retrospect, I think it just about perfectly encapsulates the best of late 1970s pop rock, and as such is a fitting bookend to ATMP, which really launched the decade for rock and roll in general.
