193: On The Beat with Spencer Leigh

Rock historian and radio interviewer Spencer Leigh has been chronicling the music scene generally and The Beatles specifically from his native Merseyside for decades. He has penned well over two dozen books, half of them on Beatles-specific subjects. In this conversation, we discuss an array of topics, including writing and researching The Beatles; Bob Wooler; Liverpool bands; Bob Dylan, and Ken Dodd, among other topics.

  1. Typical Liverpudlian….very very opinionated and frank….My fathers family were all from Liverpool , I grew up with it! Even when my uncle was really old near the end if I brought up the Beatles…he would inevitably put down Ringo’s singing… no let up till the end..

  3. This was a wonderful episode. I always enjoy hearing Spencer’s thoughts on the music scene, and have enjoyed his many interviews with colourful characters at Beatle Week on numerous occasions over the years. I will remain eternally grateful to him for playing a track from my CD of songs about the Beatle fan experience on his BBC Merseyside program, even if the panel of “jurors” didn’t like the song. Thanks a lot for having him on Something About The Beatles!

  5. I love his description of a bridge/middle 8 — some sort of thought that is kind of askance to what’s been going on in the rest of the song… lol

But his thoughts on song structure and comparing songs from artist to artist were incredibly astute.
