190A: Memo To Peter Jackson Part One

The January 1969 sessions at Twickenham and Apple Studios are The Beatles gift that keeps on giving. Thoroughly taped and filmed, it is a rich vein of material to analyze, especially as it has been chronicled in such a bad light by the group themselves, at odds with much of the evidence that has surfaced. SATB has examined the subject numerous times, notably with the two part Winter of Discontent episodes but also two additional episodes featuring Doug Sulpy (author of the seminal Drugs, Divorce and a Slipping Image) and journalist/blogger Dan Rivkin (They May Be Parted), heard on  SATB 158 and SATB 151 respectively

But with the pending autumn release of the new and revised cut of Let It Be on its way, we thought it would be a good time to both summarize and re-examine what there is to work with, considering that Peter Jackson’s work is bound to stand as THE final word for a long time on the subject. Further, it is in the interest of offering a corrective to any public perception that what is to come will be a “whitewash” (the quotes in circulation discuss the group’s friendship – as you will hear here, there is ample support for this, counter to the narrative they themselves have put out through the years). Dan Rivkin and I discuss (in a three-hour conversation split over two parts) what we feel are the important and key documented moments that *should* make the cut of Jackson’s work.

Part one includes:

~Discussions on what their goals should be
~The prospect of “divorce”
~ The roots of Abbey Road

~”All Things Must Pass”
~”White Power”

  1. I want to watch the conversation between John and Paull about why rabbits don’t fly (see page 78 of the Let It Be book)

  3. I don’t get the constant fascination with the song All Things Must Pass.
Like a lot of George songs from this period there isn’t a shade of optimism or lightness in it.
It is a battle for me to enjoy the song, although I do like the harmonies.
I know his intent with the song was probably tinged with optimism, but to me it is just all overloaded with sadness/negativity… it is a bit morose for me… sorry! As I know the love of all George’s product is off the charts here on this podcast.
I have listened to Commonwealth 100 times more than All Things Must Pass as it is b**ody funny.
I also like the tune, which I was singing in the car to today, of Wait Till Tomorrow.
For me, I want to see in the movie funny banter and some of the unreleased songs such as Commonwealth.

  5. My hopes for release in the movie-
That funny version of Help where John does that weird vocal and odd dance.
The original sing- Because I Know you Live Me So- it is so hummable this song.
I like Lennon’s laconic delivery of Maybe Baby
That funny version of House of the Rising Sun.
If I get these four I’ll be happy!

    1. James Hamilton

Wouldn’t mind a cleaned up and longer version of the fast take of Two of Us that comes at the beginning of the movie.

  7. It’s always an informative and entertaining listen with SATB!

I didn’t know George was having problems with Pattie at the time. That surely helps bring his attitude at the beginning of the sessions into perspective.
Also, I’ve always felt that it was odd John had no material for the project. He was super prolific throughout 1968.
So my conclusion as to why George’s songs were particularly ignored by John was a passive-aggressive reaction to his own inability to bring anything in. It probably cut deeper than even he realized. And since he WAS John, his disenchantment overrode George.

  9. I think if Apple really wants to preserve the Beatles legacy into eternity, they should license Beatle video footage and concerts to a company like Occulus and create a Beatles VR experience. Imagine putting on glasses and being surrounded in 360 3D by the Beatles on Ed Sullivan, Shea Stadium, the rooftop, inside the studio, etc.

  11. When I am most interested in is the constant guitar or piano playing in the background while they discuss various issues, and how we could interpret the music as a subconscious reflection on the actual discussion.

  13. I went see Let It Be the movie when it came out, I was 17 at the time and living in Daytona Beach, Florida and not once did it occur to me that it was bleak atmosphere or a film with them about to break up, NEVER! I was thrilled at it and left the theater on a big Beatle high after the “rooftop concert” sequence, the hair which I had a lot of at the time was standing on end, it was magnificent. Despite that short Paul-George argument I NEVER saw it as a downer at all, it was more of a look behind the scenes that we ever had before so I LOVED it. Great show thanks! Ps: I saw it about a week after again in the theater, same reaction! Tremendous.

  15. Just wondering if the unnamed racist musician who’d played with The Beatles who was the same guy who ended up with George’s wife?!!
