In the years since Peter Jackson’s epic re-imagining of the January 1969 saga landed, SATB has examined it through a number of angles: from Brits – women – musicians – authors – and so forth. But this will be the first time I have actually had a conversation about it with a professional historian, your friend and mine, Erin Weber. This conversation analyzes the film through the prism of (secondary) source material, and brings into focus how the work should be viewed by fans of a more serious scholarly bent.
Interesting stuff but I have a few observations :-
1. There is no mention of Glyn Johns; he was there and was probably the lone voice of the sessions being good when others said there were gloomy and tense. He also commented that Lennon was extremely funny during that time.
2. Sulphy and Schweighardt’s book would appear to have been written by non-musicians as their negative comments about the playing of the songs are somewhat ill judged and harsh. Paul, for example, on the day of his “spat” with George, later admitted to having “jock itch” to which John & George suggested he come to rehearsals with clean underwear !
3. Sulphy and Schweighardt’s book was not a transcript of the session – they did ask Apple for permission but Apple refused – so they wrote more descriptively rather than word for word.
