SATB 36In this 90th birthday commemoration, Richard and Robert discuss the Beatles’ producer, courtesy of some isolations as well as an exclusive interview recorded in 1987 by one of your hosts. Songs include “Anytime at All,” “Because” and “Pepperland.”

  1. Splendid as ever my friends. Hey Rich, it didn’t even take you 5 mins to get in a DING for 101! The ‘Because’ solos were amazing…..sounds to me like one of the 3 vocal run throughs as you get all 3 voices albeit through 3 diff mikes but there are holes where 1 or 2 of them aren’t singing…these would have been filled by the time all 3 vocal passes had been put to tape?

    Oh, and Dirk Buskin……all that chinking during the GM interview…is there something you want to admit to? Have you taken TEA?…….and biscuits??

  3. Hey Gents: I came across your site a few months ago. Much to my suprise it wasn’t the usual parroting of quotes from discredited books. I think a future episode could be on Apple recording artists.The Iveys Badfinger,James Taylor.Just my 2 cents. Thanks for your very enjoyable podcasts.

  5. I know that George Martin worked with Paul and Ringo, and had dinner with John in the late 70’s, but did he ever keep in contact with George Harrison? I don’t see in any books that they kept in touch. Great episode again!

    1. My perception is that George never looked back. Whether by design or circumstance, I don’t think they crossed paths again until Anthology.

  7. Are the isolated drums on Lennon’s “I’m the Greatest” somewhere like YouTuba (where I looked and could not find)?

    1. Hmmmm, I don’t think it was a pure drum isolation; more the basic track. (Sorry for any confusion!) The closest I can find online is this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7OHxuT2v3Y – but my recall is that I heard it on vinyl and the drums popped much more than you hear here.

      Note: this is different than the takes titled “Lennon demo 1/2,” as well as the Lennon Anthology take.

  9. Actually hearing the segues as they had originally intended, “Her Majesty” sounds so awful between “Mean Mr. Mustard” and “Polythene Pam”. They definitely made the right decision in the end.

Re: “Because,” the “isolated” John/Paul/George vocal tracks you played were not evidence of them singing on separate mics but were electronically separated by using Melodyne or some related type of software. Using the polyphonic setting on this software I’ve separated the individual strings of strummed guitar chords to add/delete/augment them one string at a time. Separating three voices would be just as easy. As you can hear there are some artifacts – for instance you can hear some of Paul’s high harmony intermittently on George’s isolation. I would bet that they actually did all sing around the same mic (three times), thereby filling three tracks of the eight they were using during the recording “Abbey Road.”
