129B: “Acoustic Beatles” with Dave Mirkin 2 (This Time It’s Personal)

Picking up where we left off, we discuss an array of topics and songs, mostly adhering to the “acoustic Beatles” theme. (For some reason, we seemed to gravitate to the White Album a lot…)

But there’s also much about the impact of success; the level of support the Beatles gave each other; George and the Traveling Wilburys; the US albums and the inherent comedy in and around their work.

Songs in no particular order include: “I Feel Fine” – “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” – “Junk” – “Two of Us” – “Norwegian Wood” – “Blackbird.”

Dave Mirkin, who first guest appeared on SATB 122, needs no introduction.

  1. Great show. Thinking about McCartney songs like Junk and Blackbird , what it shows is that these great tunes are really not “ensemble” songs. That is why it was difficult for the other Beatles to be expected to constantly be like sidemen for his tunes. Ultimately its illustrated when they pare Blackbird down very quickly to just having Paul do it solo. Happened before with Yesterday. All songwrites like to have Carte Blanche with every song you write but in a Band context it does not work that way. Mcartney tunes tended to be more like that than Lennons or Harrisons.

  3. It has now been a month since the last new show was posted. I know it must be tough for Robert in the post-Buskin era. I hope the show carries on. Good luck Robert and hopefully see you at the NY/NJ Fest in 4 weeks!

    1. No, not at all – quite the opposite in fact. Things have actually been much easier in the production of SATB since September last; like a cloud’s been lifted.

SATB has guests and episodes sketched out well into summer, so if there seems to be any lag time between posts, it’s not due to anything other than maintaining high standards – quality over quantity. Also, being methodical while balancing book writing and everything else, too.

As for an east coast visit, there are things outside the Fest in the planning stages for later this year. I’ll keep you posted!
